The Liberal’s Spiel of the Day: 12/15/06 and 12/16/06

December 16, 2006

*Note: Due to a prior commitment, I wasn’t able to post a “Spiel” for 12/15. However, I’ve included the day because the story on Sen. Johnson has been a multi-day event. Thanks for reading.

- Moratorium on executions

California and Florida have decided that enough is enough with poor performances on death penalty executions in their respective states and have placed a moratorium on the practice, citing the unnecessary pain and suffering it may cause. Oddly enough, this comes from states with two Republican governors. Yet, I must say I disagree with the move. Why? Because of this simple reason: do these murderers take into account the pain of their victims? I didn’t think so. Sorry for being “not so liberal” with that sentiment, but it’s rather true.

- Condi says no talks between Iran and Syria

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice reaffirmed the Executive Branch’s stance on the two powerful countries in the region surrounding Iraq. After Bill Nelson made a trip to meet with Syria’s president earlier this week, Rice said that Iran and Syria are not on the list of countries to start any sort of discussion with and that no diplomacy will occur between the United States and those countries. Well, at least the Iraq Study Group can cross one of their recommendations off the list as being “incomplete.”

- Senator Johnson’s outlook is “encouraging”

Things are looking better for Sen. Tim Johnson from South Dakota. Doctors say his outlook is “encouraging” after brain surgery to repair a congenital problem in his brain. The problem consisted of tangled arteries and veins that eventually burst and cause bleeding on the brain. This after Fox News was practically cheering for Johnson’s ouster so that the pathetic GOP can have some ray of hope to not have oversight over their bungled leader’s handling of the Iraq war, among other “issues.”

- Sabres knock off the Panthers 2-1

The Sabres power play came alive for a rare 5 on 3 goal to defeat the Panthers 2-1 Thursday night at the HSBC Arena. The Sabres struck first off a goal by Thomas Vanek and then Maxim Afinogenov tallied the game winner early on in the third period. Ryan Miller stopped 12 shots in the final period to secure the victory for the top team in the Eastern Conference.

- Liberal Spiel will have its first special report on the train derailments that affected Erie County recently. The report will be available Tuesday on the blog. Many have overlooked these derailments as just a rare occurrence and that two in as many days was just a fluke. However, these are popping up throughout the nation and have caused concern. So look for the special report on Tuesday.

- Look for the report and the next edition of the “Spiel” tomorrow. Until then, take care.

Israel to continue targeted killings against Palestinians

December 14, 2006

According to Al-Jazeera’s website, the Israeli High Court of Justice has decided not to ban targeted killings against Palestinians by Israelis. (See article on Israel’s failure to ban targeted killings)

This ruling will help, according to a senior Israeli jurist, military commanders avoid war crimes lawsuits that have been filed abroad. Also, the ruling said that it cannot be proven that all targeted killings were against international law while also saying that such attacks are not always legal.

While some terrorist targets have been killed as a result of these targeted killings, many innocent bystanders have died as a result of these attacks as well. The Palestinians have called these attacks “assassination” and that “it is unbecoming of a nation state”, referring to Israel.

White House criticizes Nelson for visit to Syria

December 14, 2006

Bill Nelson, a Senator from Florida, traveled to Syria and met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The White House has criticized this move, saying that it grants Syria attention it doesn’t deserve and in the words of Tony Snow, “Just because they have visitors does not mean that the position of the United States government has changed.”

FLASHBACK: Jack Cafferty critiques Bush on calling the Iraq War a “comma”

December 14, 2006

Watch Cafferty blast Bush for mentioning that the Iraq War, when all is said and done, will be just a “comma” in the history books.

Great “Cafferty File” by the man himself. Of course, this was barely mentioned in the mainstream press, yet when Kerry slips on a joke, he must apologize and the media chastized him.
